Startup Weekend Global Battle 2014

 

Overview :

Nepal Entrepreneurs’ Hub in its quest to nurture entrepreneurship, support startup communities and contribute towards a vibrant entrepreneurial ecosystem, joined hand with international community to organize Startup Weekend Global Battle 2014. Following the footsteps of the inaugural Startup Weekend Global Battle 2013, 51 entrepreneurs from all walk of life joined the international movement of international startup weekend competition. The event was held from 21st November to 23rd November 2014 at SAP Falcha, Kathmandu. Like previous Startup Weekend Global edition, there was no special theme for the event.

The first day of the event was allotted for the participants to pitch their ideas. Twelve teams were formed through voting after the pitching session. All 51 participants participating in the event casted their votes.  Out of the pitched ideas 12 top ideas were selected.

The second day of the weekend was devoted to mentoring from the mentors to validate their business idea. Mentors came in throughout the day for the mentoring session. The second day focused on business validation, market research, growth potential, customer validation among others. Following is the list of  mentors who came in throughout the second day.

The final day of the Weekend focused on the validation and work on towards the final pitch to the panel of judges. Mock pitching session was held in front of mock judges which gave the participants the feel of the final pitch and also provided them with suggestion where they can improve. Participants pitched their idea in front of the jury members at the evening. All ten teams worked thoroughly with their team members and resource persons visiting the available mentors. The final pitching was for 5 minutes followed by 3 minutes of question answer from the jury.

It is a Sentiment Analysis and opinion mining of customer opinions posted on social media, websites and various other platforms.

An eatery for noodle lovers that have ample space for doodlers too! Doodle friendly spaces with chalkboard walls, chalkboard tables for art and inspiring messages. People will not only come here for art and noodles but also to help children. How? The place will be turned into a classroom for street children once a week and their mid day lunch will be sponsored.

E-menu for restaurants is an interactive restaurant application to digitalize the ordering system of the restaurant. This also includes an amazing website from where users can order food from home and get them delivered at the desired place.

Willem Grimminck
Willem Grimminck

Willem completed his Masters in Social Science & Management from Tilburg University in the Netherlands. He began his career at the HR-business unit of the American professional services organization ‘Towers Perrin’ in Amsterdam. Through VSO, UK based development organization, he took the opportunity to serve as programme manager for a human rights organisation in India (Jharkhand). There he initiated a livelihood programme for economic integration of marginalized woman. To support the programme he launched a Public-Private-Partnership (PPP) between state government, UN offices, NGO’s and industry bodies such as TATA Steel and Arcelor Mittal.

In 2010 Willem moved to Nepal with his family. After successfully supporting a small dairy to grow its business, by developing a business plan and matchmaking with foreign investments, he co-founded ‘One to Watch’. As an asset manager One to Watch is dedicated to develop, support and monitor foreign Impact Investments in Nepal. In 2014 One to Watch has five investments under management and launched the accelerator ‘Rockstart.Impact’ to support companies to get ready for foreign investments. Willem aims to grow the investment portfolio of One to Watch to 20 companies by 2017.

Amrit Tuladhar
Amrit Tuladhar

Amrit Tuladhar is currently the CEO of Muncha.com. Muncha.com is an online shopping and money transfer site that can be used to send gifts and money to people in Nepal. He has been working at Muncha.com for 14 years since 1999. Prior to joining his family business. he worked in Himalayan Bank for about 5 years. He holds a MBA degree from Marshal University, USA and finished his undergraduate degree from Berea College in Business.

Ranjit Acharya
Ranjit Acharya

Mr Ranjit Acharya is a well-known name in the field of advertising in Nepal. With an experience of more than two decades, Mr. Acharya is the founder, owner and the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Prisma Advertising. He also resides as the Director of Media Hub and Managing Director of Neel Barahi Films. Besides being an entrepreneur, he is also a motivational speaker and has been training students to managers on personal growth and development under the program named “Success Mantra”. He also pens down this thoughts in creative way in lyrics which is distributed in form of music

Mentors

Manish Modi
Manish Modi

Manish co-founded Janaki Technology in 2007, and currently is the Director of the company. Started a product company in Nepal and took it to a global level. Manish is a part of Morpheus Ventures Acceleration Program(Indian Startup Accelerator). He is also fellow entrepreneur in Startup Chile. Passionate about Startups and Entrepreneurship, Manish has first hand experiences working with startups in Nepal, India, Latin America and Silicon Valley.

Ashish Shrestha
Ashish Shrestha

Ashish is the  World Bank’s Focal Point in Nepal for the Scaling-Up Renewable Energy Program in Low Income Countries (SREP), coordinating both the large biogas and mini-grids projects. He is also the local coordinator for the Nepal component of the regional initiative on the mitigation of short-lived climate pollutants in South Asia and for the Bank’s analytic work on decentralized energy access in Nepal.

He was previously a researcher with the World Bank’s Development Economics Research Group, where his research focus was on the nexus of clean energy and climate change, including bio-energy and forest carbon, as well as sustainable transportation. Ashish holds an M.A. in Sustainable International Development from Brandeis University and a B.A. in Economics from Hamilton College.

Satish Joshi
Satish Joshi

Satish is a Project Finance & Management specialist working with the Investment Board Nepal. Before joining the Investment Board, he worked in the US for Pattern Energy and Babcock and Brown in the Renewable Energy & Transmission sector principally focused on utility scale wind power development. Mr. Joshi has worked for the Investment Board Nepal (IBN) since its inception in December 2011. At the IBN, he is involved in the Board’s Hydropower initiatives primarily working on the development and negotiation of Project Development Agreements with the developers of four export oriented HEPs, and is also leading the interactions with CWEI on the West Seti storage project. Given the export component of these projects Mr. Joshi has also been involved in working with the GoN on a pushing forward the Power Trade Agreement agenda with India.

Madan Lamsal
Madan Lamsal

Madan Lamsal is the Editor-in-Chief of New Business Age (monthly) and Aarthik Abhiyan National daily. He is also the Chairman of New Business Age Pvt. Ltd. and Minds Nepal Pvt. Ltd. (A Research, Training & Consultancy organization), which organizes various events every year like Money Expo, Tourism Next, etc. Lamsal is one of the pioneers in Nepal’s business economic journalism who has recently been awarded the Financial Literary Award 2013 by Center for Economic and Financial Studies (CEFS). Lamsal had started his journalism career with The Financial Times weekly since 1992 as a Reporter and was promoted as the Sub-Editor in 1995. Also a Rotarian Lamsal has contributed for different research projects for FNCCI, UNCTAD, etc. as the consultant. Widely traveled in more than a dozen countries of the world Lamsal is also an author of a book titled Titomitho (Nepal’s first Corporate Humour book) besides being a Singer & Lyric writer for Music album called -Yeklai Yeklai.

Mahesh Swar
Mahesh Swar

Mahesh is Assistant General Manager at Kantipur Publication. He has more than a decade experience in all verticals in media. He is also an entrepreneur and has invested or has been an adviser on multiple companies such as BOD of Hello Paisa and Citizen College along with being chairman at Vargaw Saving and Credit Co. He is also a visiting faculty at Media Management and Entrepreneurship, KU and Lecturer of Marketing Entrepreneurship at Kings College and also teaches entrepreneurship to MBS at St. Xavier’s College, Maitighar.

Shashi Bhattarai
Shashi Bhattarai

Shashi’s earlier experience includes private sector industrial financing in Nepal with Nepal Industrial Development Corporation (NIDC). Shashi headed South Asian Development Fund (SADF) Secretariat for two years when it was in Nepal, taking over from Industrial Development Bank of India (IDBI) , India and handed over to National Bank of Pakistan. Shashi also served as visiting faculty at Institute of Engineering. Tribhuvan University, and Kathmandu University School of Management (KUSOM) for teaching Technology & Innovation Management (TIM) and Decision Support Systems (DSS) respectively. Shashi is Chairman at Knowledge Holding International Pvt. Ltd. (K-Hint) , Vice President at IT Professional Forum (ITPF), Nepal, Currently Shashi is working partly with infoDev, The World Bank, for promoting Innovation and Entrepreneurship over the sectors of ICT and Agriculture in Nepal. Shashi holds Masters of Engineering in Planning and Management from Asian Institute of Technology (AIT), Thailand and Bachelors of Engineering from IIT Roorkee, India.

Bibhusan Bista
Bibhusan Bista

Bibhusan has had local, regional and international experience in the areas of entrepreneurship, software development, information and communication technologies for development, research and innovation for more than a decade. He is the coordinator for Mobile Social Networking in Nepal, a community of practice for mobile entrepreneurship in Nepal that was initiated in 2011 with support from infoDev, The World Bank. At present, he is also involved in Open Data movement to promote transparency and accountability together with different national and international stakeholders. He has worked with Bellanet/IDRC in the areas of Technical Innovation and was also associated with SAP International to strengthen technical capacity of the network, leading research and innovation wing of Bellanet Asia for more than five years. He was a key member of research team that carried out national level research on Public Access to Information communication venues in Nepal for University of Washington, Seattle in 2009.

He is also a part time lecturer at Kathmandu College of Management.

Binay Bohra
Binay Bohra

Mr Binay Bohra founded Vianet Communication in 1999 and serves as its current managing director. He has been advisor to South Asian Network Operators Group and also an executive member for ICT Development Technology Committee for FNCCI. He is past chairman of Nepal Internet Exchange which focuses on keeping the local content within Nepal to increase the efficiency and now leads Internet Service Provider Association of Nepal.

Sixit Bhatta
Sixit Bhatta

6+ years of progressive work experience at United Telecom Limited with experience on operation and maintenance of CDMA network, Project planning and implementation as well as marketing and business development. Mr Sixit brings along professional experience in Financial Modeling and Business development of Mobile Financial Services. He is a visiting Faculty at Ace Institute of Management, teaching Marketing management and business planning to the MBA students. He is also a member of the Toastmasters International Club.

Vidhan Rana
Vidhan Rana

Mr Vidhan finished his Bachelor’s degree in Business Management and Economics in 2008 from Hope College in Michigan, USA. After graduation he worked at Whittaker Associates, Inc., a market research firm. At Whittaker, Vidhan worked with several state and local economic development agencies. He has provided guidance and support to small businesses and medium size enterprises on issues of employment generation. Vidhan established a research division for Whittaker Associates in Nepal in October 2010, and Biruwa Ventures in July 2011 to support aspiring entrepreneurs fulfill their dreams of starting their own ventures.

Sanam Chitrakar

Mr Sanam Chitrakar holds seventeen years of multidisciplinary entrepreneurship development, coaching, training and consulting experiences. Since quitting his full time development jobs in 2008, Sanam has been serving Nepalese entrepreneurial ecosystem as market researcher, connector and concept developer. Since February 2014, he is leading Biruwa Advisors the consulting division of Biruwa Ventures after merging with Aadhar Development, the company he established in 2008. Besides he is also continuing his training, organizational strategy, life and executive coaching consultations.
